Why does a cat knead a blanket with their paws?

Cats instinctively knead soft surfaces with their paws - a behavior often called "making biscuits." It's a reflex left over from nursing: kittens knead their mother's belly to stimulate milk flow. An adult cat returns to this behavior when they're completely at ease - kneading, purring, and gradually drifting off to sleep.

PUSZEK, at 19.7×14 in (50×35 cm), is a pineapple-textured faux fur throw in a compact size that fits wall shelves and platforms. GOODY is a soft, fluffy throw from the GOODY collection.

Premium blankets (FLUFFY, PUFFY, PRESTO, LUNO, FURIO, NOVA) are large, thick blankets for you and your cat to share. FLUFFY has a long, plush pile. PUFFY has a short, dense pile. LUNO and NOVA are double-sided - fabric on one side, fur on the other. FURIO has a duvet-like feel with an insulating layer. PRESTO is a thermal blanket with an extra insulating layer - the warmest model in the range. Premium blankets work well as a throw over a couch, armchair, or bed - protecting your furniture from fur and claws, while giving your cat a soft, warm surface to rest on.

Cat blankets and protecting your furniture

A blanket laid over a couch or armchair does two jobs at once. It protects the upholstery from fur, dirt from paws, and claws. At the same time, it gives your cat a designated soft spot on the furniture - instead of scratching the upholstery, the cat kneads and scratches the blanket.

In my own cattery, blankets sit on couches, armchairs, and beds. Cats naturally choose the soft surface of a blanket over smooth upholstery. When the blanket needs washing, you simply take it off the furniture - the upholstery underneath stays clean.

Where should you put a cat blanket?

A blanket is the most versatile product in a cat's space - it fits in almost anywhere. On the couch next to you (resting together), in a bed as an extra layer of warmth, in a cave as bedding, on a wall shelf as a soft surface for sleeping up high, on a windowsill by the window, or in a carrier while traveling.

From what I've seen in my own cattery, cats get attached to their blanket in the same way they do to a bed - they return to it every day, mark it with their scent, and treat it as their territory. That's why, once a cat has accepted a blanket, it's best not to move it around too often.
