A cave for a large cat has to meet different requirements than a cave for a standard-sized cat. A Maine Coon weighing 18-22 lbs (8-10 kg) needs a bigger entrance opening, more room inside, and a reinforced structure that doesn't deform under their weight. Why does a large cat need a bigger cave?
A cat looking for a hideaway wants to feel the walls against their body - that's what gives them the sense of shelter. But at the same time, they need to fit comfortably: getting in without squeezing, lying on their side with legs stretched out, turning over and changing position while they sleep.
A Maine Coon can reach up to 47 in (120 cm) from nose to tail tip. A Ragdoll weighs 13-20 lbs. A Norwegian Forest Cat, 11-20 lbs. For these breeds, standard caves designed around cats half that size are too tight. A cat that has to squeeze in, or can't stretch out, won't use the cave - they'll pick a cabinet, the space under a bed, or somewhere else that gives them enough room.
Which large cat caves are available?
CAT CAB caves are round, soft caves in upholstery fabric and premium faux fur, designed for medium and large cats. The series includes several variants: the classic CAT CAB, CAT CAB FLAP with a flap at the entrance, CAT CAB ROYAL with decorative detailing, the hanging CAT CAB SWING, and models in the FOREST, GARDEN, LOVE NATURAL, and ORCHARD color collections. CAT CAB caves have a stable structure that holds its shape without an internal frame. They work well for cats up to around 13-15 lbs.
BONBON caves are large, round caves in premium faux fur, designed with the biggest breeds in mind - Maine Coon, Ragdoll, Norwegian Forest Cat. A bigger entrance opening, more room inside, a reinforced structure. BONBON DELUXE has decorative appliqués. BONBON with buttons is the variant with decorative buttons. These are the roomiest soft caves in the PRASKA range.
ARENA plywood caves are structures in hardwood plywood with a fabric cover. Without the cover, ARENA works as an open playground with a sensory mat. With the cover on, it becomes an enclosed cave. The standard ARENA, and the FOREST, GARDEN, AQUA, and LOVE collection versions, are designed for large cats. ARENA XXL is the biggest model - it works well for Maine Coons over 18 lbs, and in multi-cat households, where 2 cats can lie in the cave at once.
CAT CAB, BONBON, or ARENA - how to choose?
CAT CAB works well for cats up to around 13-15 lbs who like a closed, soft hideaway. A soft structure, easy to move around, no assembly needed.
BONBON is the choice for the biggest breeds, once CAT CAB is too small. More room inside, and the premium faux fur gives both warmth and a soft surface for kneading.
ARENA is a 2-in-1 solution - a cave and a playground in one. It works well when a cat needs both a hideaway and somewhere to be active. The plywood structure is the most durable of the three. Covers can be taken off for washing and swapped out seasonally.
Hygiene for a large cat's cave
A large cat leaves behind more fur, paw dirt, and natural secretions than a small cat. That's why PRASKA's large cat caves have replaceable cushions with silicone fiberfill, washable at 86°F (30°C). Waterproof mats are available for the BONBON and ARENA caves as an extra protective layer. ARENA covers can be taken off and washed separately. ARENA is a plywood structure that, without its cover, works as an open playground with a sensory mat, and with the cover on, becomes an enclosed cave. It's a 2-in-1 solution that neither CAT CAB nor BONBON offers.
Can the cushions and covers be washed?
Yes. The replaceable cushions with silicone fiberfill can be washed at 86°F (30°C). The covers on ARENA caves come off independently of the structure and wash separately. Waterproof mats are also available for the BONBON and ARENA caves.
